Laugharne Castle: Poetic Beauty, Medieval Power, and Ghostly Whispers

A Castle of Literature and Legends

Unlike Kidwelly Castle, which stands as a testament to battle and rebellion (as explored in my previous blog here), Laugharne Castle is a place where history, poetry, and mystery converge. Perched above the Taf Estuary, this Norman stronghold-turned-Tudor-mansion has witnessed sieges, literary inspiration, and ghostly tales that refuse to fade. Walking through its ivy-clad ruins, I couldn’t help but feel that Laugharne Castle ghost stories are more than just folklore. Some say the spirits of its past still linger, whispering through the corridors and watching from the towers.

The Phantom of the Battlements

One of the most frequently reported ghostly sightings at Laugharne Castle is that of a spectral figure standing atop the battlements, gazing out over the Taf Estuary. Some believe this to be the ghost of Sir John Perrot, a nobleman once accused of treason, who spent his last days imprisoned in the Tower of London before his mysterious death in 1592.

Visitors have described seeing a shadowy figure in Tudor attire, standing silently before vanishing into thin air. Others report a sudden chill in the air and the eerie sensation of being watched. Is this Sir John Perrot’s restless spirit, forever tied to the castle he once called home?

The Mysterious Footsteps of the Great Hall

Laugharne Castle’s Great Hall has long been a site of unexplained phenomena. Disembodied footsteps, the rustling of unseen fabric, and sudden whispers have all been reported here, especially after dusk.

Some believe these sounds belong to the ghosts of Tudor-era courtiers, trapped in echoes of a past long gone. Others suggest it’s nothing more than the natural creaking of ancient timber and stone. Either way, the feeling of not being alone is hard to ignore.

The Poet’s Haunting Muse

Beyond its military history, Laugharne Castle is famous for its connection to Dylan Thomas, one of Wales’ most celebrated poets. His writing shed sat just beyond the castle walls, where he penned much of his famous work, including Under Milk Wood.

Some visitors claim to hear whispers of poetry in the wind, as if Thomas’ words still drift through the ruins. Others speak of a ghostly figure sitting near the windows, lost in thought. Whether these are mere stories or a lingering presence of literary genius, Laugharne Castle remains a place where history and creativity intertwine.

Historical Figure: Sir John Perrot

One of the most infamous figures tied to Laugharne Castle is Sir John Perrot, a Tudor nobleman who once owned the estate. Known for his political ambition and fiery temper, he was a powerful figure in Welsh and English history. However, his downfall came when he was accused of treason by Queen Elizabeth I and sentenced to death. He mysteriously died before his execution, leading to speculation that he was poisoned while imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Many believe his spirit still haunts the battlements of Laugharne Castle, a place he ruled but never truly left. His dramatic life and death will be explored further in my next historical blog. Read his story Here

Where to Next?

Leaving Laugharne Castle, I was struck by the contrast between its literary charm and eerie atmosphere. Unlike Kidwelly’s military might, Laugharne offers a haunting elegance, where history, poetry, and ghosts coexist.

But my journey isn’t over. Next, I explore Dinefwr Castle, a site deeply connected to Welsh royalty and ancient legends. Some say the spirits of Lords Rhys and his ancestors still roam its halls. I can’t wait to uncover the truth.

Disclaimer

While Laugharne Castle has a rich history of ghost stories, all paranormal claims should be viewed with a critical mind. Many sightings can be explained by psychology, environmental factors, and historical context. This blog explores these stories from both a historical and skeptical perspective.
